With the humongous cones that hang heavily from its tips, the sugar pine is one of the most recognizable and iconic trees in the Tahoe Basin and our Forest & Conservation Lab is giving away sugar pine seedlings to Tahoe residents this weekend from October 29-31.

Sugar pine trees experienced mortality in large parts of the Tahoe Basin during the intense 5-year drought from 2012-2016 that coincided with an increasing population of mountain pine beetles. We have been studying the genetics of the trees that survived this difficult period (the “survivors”) and their adaptive traits that provide insight into the tree’s response to climate change impacts including drought, insects, pathogens, and the soil environment. One of the results of this study is a crop of baby trees, the progeny of these “survivors” that are genetically shown to better withstand the threats of climate change. Help us restore these native pines to the area and bring back the diversity of a healthy forest. Pick-up information detailed above.
